Youth Consultation Report

PERCEPTIONS ON MEDIA 1

Mary and Paula are having a discussion on how music negatively influences the minds of our youngsters. Mary is of the opinion that back when she was a teenager, love music was more focused on emotions. She says that nowadays love is sex. It is not even sugarcoated she says, they just blatantly say that they want to get in your pants.

Paula says music has nothing to do with behavior, music is just entertainment, it is up to the parents and the government to keep the children on track. Back in the days we also listened to Shabba Ranks and Little Lenny and so on, but we didn't pull off our pants or hise up our skirts as soon as we see a good-looking partner.

Who do you agree with Mary or Paula? Think about a popular song, what is the song about? What does it say about men? What does it say about women?

PERCEPTIONS ON MEDIA 2

The island government of St.Maarten is undergoing discussions on putting a ban on uncensored video-clips, movies, music and video-games. After a study conducted by the department of youth affairs it was concluded that negative messages are sent via this media. According to the study, a ban on such material will be able to positively influence the high risk behavior activities that the youth engage in.

You have been selected to develop a policy that will assist in the development of this plan. It is your task to put in writing what the pros (advantages) and cons (disadvantages) are of such a policy as well as to develop a plan that will help to reduce the negative influence that the media has on our youth behavior.
